Misfit Part II

Well I am finally starting the front of the sweater. It really felt like an eternity to get to this point. The back was so boring to make, but I am really enjoying knitting the pattern. So far so good.

However, I am feeling a little concerned about the size of sweater. Even though I made a gauge swatch and measured carefully, the sweater just seems way to small. I am hoping it is just an illusion created by the curling edges of the sweater. Regardless, my husband is a pretty narrow individual, so I hope it looks good on him. Otherwise, it will be rip, rip, rip.

So, not to go a random tangent, but I had kind of an interesting experience over the last week. One evening I was having a few beers and tacos with a few acquaintances and the topic of giving up your maiden name for a married one arose. I soon found out I was out numbered, I was the only one within the group that had not changed her name.

Now I personally don't care if other people did or did not change theirs, it just wasn't the right choice for me. However something strange happened, which I mind you has happened before, those who did change their names become defensive about their choice.

I guess I did not expect this to happen with this particular group of girls. Once again I had a group of married female trying to legitimatize their decision to me. As if I am the authority on appropriate progressive female conduct. I actually had one girl state that she did not think it was appropriate to keep your maiden name, very passive aggresively.

While I did expect this type of comment from my mother-in-law or grandparents, I did not expect this from women I consider progressive. I felt so betrayed. Actually, I do care. I just have to say, screw tradition - do what you feel is right, no matter how small.

Regardless, knitting, right. I hope to finish this up this week and I will post for all to enjoy.

I think that your decision was the right one to make. If not for any other reason than because, as you said, it felt right to you to keep your maiden name.
My sister in law and I had a similar disagreement about wearing a veil over your face at the wedding. Traditionally that means you are abandoning your own view of the world and submitting to your husband's.
No matter what one person things or feels, it all boils down to what feels right to yourself. Because that's really the only person you should bother trying to please. :)
